Your groin area is the region between your lower abdomen and your upper thighs.

Diagnosing and Treating Groin Pulls

A pinched nerve in the groin happens when tissues — like muscles, bones, or tendons — in your groin compress a nerve. This can result in symptoms like paintingling, or numbness that may only affect your groin area or shoot down your leg. A temporarily pinched nerve might not cause long-term complications.

But a nerve pinched for a long period can become permanently damaged or cause chronic pain. Muscle spasms can result in a twitching sensation or pain that can run from mild to severe. The symptoms are often similar to those of a pinched nerve. Some common causes of muscle spasms include:. The most obvious way to identify a pinched nerve is by trying to isolate what movements result in any noticeable symptoms like pain or weakness.

For example, if you step down on your foot and the resulting pressure causes pain in your groin, a pinched nerve may be the issue. Your doctor may also recommend tests to look more closely at the tissues and behaviors of muscles and nerves in your groin and pelvic area to diagnose a pinched nerve.

Some possible tests include:. You may also be referred to a neurologist. Here are some home remedies to reduce the pain of a pinched nerve or stop this from happening altogether:.

See your doctor as soon as possible if a pinched nerve is causing intense, disruptive pain that makes it hard to go about your daily life or work for a long period of time. You should also see your doctor if any pain appears suddenly without any obvious cause like sitting for long periods or doing intense physical activity.

See your doctor if the pain lasts for a long time or is so intense that it disrupts your daily activities.

The telltale symptoms of sciatic nerve pain are severe pain in your back, buttocks, and legs. Drinking enough water can help you burn fat and increase your energy levels.Oxygenated blood begins its course down the chest through the thoracic aortaa major blood vessel with branches that serve the chest muscles and lungs.

This becomes the abdominal aorta. In the pelvis, the abdominal aorta forks into two branches called common iliac arteries. These travel down each leg, where they branch into internal and external iliac arteries. These branch further to supply the legs. The largest of these branches are the femoral arteries. Branching from the internal iliac artery, the internal pudendal artery is the main vessel that supplies oxygenated blood to the penis and makes erections possible.

The testicular arteriesalso known as the internal spermatic arteries, supply blood to the testes. They branch from the abdominal aorta.

Veins are the blood vessels that return oxygen-depleted blood back to the heart for reuse.

They typically follow the same path as arteries. Similar to the arteries in the pelvis, veins branch within the legs. As blood returns to the heart these branches — the external iliac veins — feed into the inferior vena cavathe large vessel that runs parallel to the abdominal aorta. In the pelvis, the spinal column ends in the sacrumfive fused vertebral bones that form the back of the pelvis.

Behind it is the sacral plexusa collection of nerves that serve the pelvic area, genitals, buttocks, and parts of the legs and feet. The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve, and originates from the sacral plexus. This large nerve fiber begins in the lower back at the spinal column, runs through the buttocks beneath the gluteus maximus muscleand extends down the back of the thigh. There is one sciatic nerve in each leg, and each is about one inch wide in the pelvis.

Humans are sexual, meaning that both a male and a female are needed to reproduce. Each is equipped with specific organs capable of producing specific….The pelvic region is the area between the trunk — or main body — and the lower extremities, or legs.

The pelvic bones are smaller and narrower. The bones of the pelvis are the hip bones, sacrum, and coccyx. Each hip bone contains three bones — the iliumischiumand pubis — that fuse together as we grow older. The sacrumfive fused vertebral bones, joins the pelvis between the crests of the ilium.

Below the sacrum is the coccyxor tailbone, a section of fused bone that is the end of the vertebral column. The pelvis forms the base of the spine as well as the socket of the hip joint. The hip joint is a ball-and-socket joint created by the femur and a part of the pelvis called the acetabulum.

This joint and its ability to rotate in many angles is one of many pieces of anatomy that allows humans to walk.

The external male genitals include the penis, scrotum, and testicles. The testicles produce sperm cells and the hormone testosterone. The scrotum is a pouch-like sac that hangs below the penis, between the thighs.

It pulls the testicles closer to the body to protect them against cold temperatures and potential injury. The penis is the primary male sexual organ. This tube-shaped, muscular organ fills with blood and becomes firm when a man is sexually aroused. At the point of sexual climax, a healthy penis will ejaculate semen, a mixture of spermatozoa and other fluids that help nourish the sperm and transport it to the female reproductive system for procreation.

The penis also holds the urethrathe opening through which urine is expelled from the body.

The pelvic region also contains several digestive organs. These include the large intestine and small intestine. Both are vital to digesting and expelling solid waste. The large intestine ends in the rear of the pelvis at the anus, a sphincter muscle that controls the disposal of solid waste. The pelvic region holds major organs under its layers of muscles. Some of the most important include the major digestive organs, the intestines. The small intestine is the longest part of the digestive tract.

It receives food from the stomach and begins breaking down the food while absorbing the majority of its nutrients. The mucus this long hollow organ secretes breaks down proteins and carbohydrates and protects the small intestine from harmful stomach enzymes, proteins that increase the rate of chemical reactions.

Enzymes secreted by the liver and pancreas further aid digestion. The small intestine is longer of the two, so the large intestine earned its name because it is much wider in diameter.

The large intestine connects to the small intestine in the lower right section of the abdominal cavity. A muscular sphincter ringlike structurethe ileocecalprevents food from traveling back up the small intestine. The large intestine is filled with millions of bacteria that turn food into solid feces and remove water and electrolytes. As food travels up and around, muscles in the large intestine break down the material before it descends down the colonthe last part of the digestive tract.

From there, it travels through the rectum and out of the anus. The muscles of the penis include the corpora cavernosatwo cylinder-like chambers that run down the sides of the penis. Upon arousal, the corpora cavernosa fill with blood, and the penis becomes firm. This is known as an erection. While the penis is erect, an inner layer, the corpus spongiosumremains spongy and limber.

During ejaculation, semen travels from the testes through the epididymisa long, twisted tube on both sides of the testes. It then moves up to the vas deferens and behind the bladder. From there, it travels to the seminal vesicle and out through the urethra.

The prostate gland is a walnut-sized gland that controls the release of urine from the bladder. It also secretes a milky fluid that is the major component in semen: the part that helps nourish and transport the sperm.

Above the prostate is the bladder. Also known as the urinary bladder, it is an expandable, muscular sac that stores urine. When signaled, the bladder releases the urine into the urethra.

The corpus spongiosum is yet another part of the male anatomy that facilitates sexual reproduction. It is a soft, spongy tissue that surrounds the…. The fimbriae of the uterine tube, also known as fimbriae tubae, are small, fingerlike projections at the end of the fallopian tubes, through which….

There are many blood vessels within the male pelvic region. The most common cause of groin pain is a muscle, tendon or ligament strain, particularly in athletes who play sports such as hockey, soccer and football.

Groin pain might occur immediately after an injury, or pain might come on gradually over a period of weeks or even months. Groin pain might be worsened by continued use of the injured area.

Less commonly, a bone injury or fracture, a hernia, or even kidney stones might cause groin pain. Although testicle pain and groin pain are different, a testicle condition can sometimes cause pain that spreads to the groin area. Causes shown here are commonly associated with this symptom.

Show references Johnson R, et al.When a muscle is strained, the muscle is stretched too far. Less severe strains pull the muscle beyond their normal excursion. More severe strains tear the muscle fibers, and can even cause a complete tear of the muscle. Most commonly, groin pulls are minor tears of some muscle fibers, but the bulk of the muscle tissue remains intact.

Groin pulls are often seen in athletes who participate in sports such as ice hockey and soccer. The injury appears to be related to factors including hip muscle strength, preseason conditioning, and previous injury.

Because of this, proper conditioning is of utmost importance to prevent groin strain injury. A pulled groin is usually a clear diagnosis. Most athletes know what the injury is before they seek medical attention. However, other conditions can mimic the symptoms of a groin strain. Sports hernias have been found in patients who were diagnosed with chronic groin strains. The symptoms of a sports hernia are often nearly identical to those of a groin strain.

Once a strain is diagnosed, you can begin treatment for your groin pull. Most often, treatment can be accomplished with some simple steps. These include rest, stretching, and some oral medications.

Rarely is more invasive treatment necessary. Groin strain injuries can be a frustration for athletes and weekend warriors alike. The desire to return to full activity often conflicts with the duration of recovery. The length of time needed to recover from a groin strain will depend both on the severity of the injury and the healing of the injured individual. Doing the appropriate treatment can help to ensure healing progresses as quickly as possible.

However, it is important to allow your body the time it needs to complete the healing process. Without doing so, an athlete may risk re-injury and beginning the healing process over right back at square one.

Having a physical therapist or athletic trainer help to guide you along the recovery path can be very helpful. Some simple stretches can help ease the symptoms of a groin strain. Furthermore, stretching can be a useful part of preventing groin injuries from occurring.

As a general rule, the stretches should not hurt. There should be a gentle pulling sensation of the muscle, but this should not be painful. The first stretch is the squatting adductor stretch:. The butterfly stretch is done in a sitting position. The cross-leg stretch is done while sitting. This stretch will emphasize the muscles of the inner thigh and front of the thigh. If you have symptoms of a severe groin pull, you should be evaluated for proper treatment. The male genital system consists of both external and internal parts.

The external male genitalia include the penis, urethra, and scrotum. The internal male genitalia include the seminal vesicle, testes, vas deferens, epididymis, prostate, bulbourethral gland, and ejaculatory duct. The penis is the main part of external male genitalia, which has both sexual and bodily functions. It is able to ejaculate semen containing sperm during sex and to relieve the body of urine. The urethra transports the urine from the bladder, out of the male body. Semen also travels through the urethra.

Each male has two scrotal pouches, which house certain parts of the internal male genitalia epididymis, testes, and lower spermatic cords. The testes are the most important part of internal male genitalia because they make and store sperm, as well as supply the male body with hormones, which control the development of male characteristics and reproductive organs. The epididymis stores, matures, and transports sperm between the testes and the vas deferens, which channels sperm toward the urethra.

The seminal vesicles are adjacent to the urethra and secrete a milky fluid that is ultimately discharged through the ejaculatory duct. The bulbourethral glands also assist in the discharge of semen.
